This recipe infuses the classic comfort of sloppy joes with the vibrant, tangy-sweet flavor of our 919 Sauce, both in the meat mixture and as a final irresistible drizzle. Get ready for a taste of Raleigh in every messy, delicious bite!
Yields: 6-8 servings
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients For Sloppy Joe Filling:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
¼ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
½ cup 919 Tangy Mambo Sauce (incorporating the Raleigh flavor!)
¼ cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (adds a layer of umami that complements the Mambo)
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (to enhance the tang)
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (for a subtle depth of flavor)
½ cup beef broth (or water)
Ingredients For Serving:
8-10 hamburger buns, preferably toasted
919 Tangy Mambo Sauce, for drizzling (about ¼ - ½ cup, or to taste)
Optional toppings: shredded cheddar cheese, pickled jalapeños, coleslaw, crispy fried onions
Instructions:
1. Sauté the Aromatics:
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Sauté, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
2. Brown the Meat:
Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet.
Use a spatula to break the meat apart into crumbles.
Cook, stirring frequently, until the meat is browned and no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease from the skillet.
3. Add the Spices:
Reduce the heat to medium. Stir in the garlic powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, black pepper, and salt. Cook for 1 minute more, stirring constantly, until fragrant. This awakens the spices and adds depth to the flavor.
4. Build the Tangy Mambo Sauce Base:
Pour in the ½ cup of 919 Tangy Mambo Sauce.
Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, and Dijon mustard. Stir well to combine all the ingredients and coat the meat and vegetables evenly.
5. Simmer for Flavor:
Pour in the beef broth (or water). Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer for at least 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully and the sauce to thicken slightly. If the mixture becomes too thick, add a little more broth or water.
6. Prepare the Buns and Toppings:
While the sloppy joe filling is simmering, prepare your hamburger buns. Toasting them lightly on a dry skillet or in the oven adds a nice texture and prevents them from getting too soggy.
Gather any optional toppings you desire.
7. Assemble and Drizzle:
Once the sloppy joe filling has simmered to your desired consistency, spoon a generous amount of the hot mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted hamburger bun.
Place the top half of the bun over the filling.
Now for the grand finale – generously drizzle the remaining 919 Tangy Mambo Sauce over the top of each sloppy joe. The extra drizzle adds a burst of fresh, bright tanginess that elevates the entire experience.
8. Serve Immediately:
Serve your Sloppy Joes immediately with your favorite sides, such as coleslaw, potato chips, or a simple green salad.
Enjoy
Enjoy the delicious fusion of classic sloppy joe comfort with the unique, tangy-sweet kick of the 919! The double dose of flavor – simmered within and drizzled on top – truly makes this a standout dish.
